Central Lowlands
The Central Lowlands are a broad area of low-lying and heavily populated land in southern Scotland. Over half of the country's population lies in this belt, which runs from the Firth of Clyde in the west to the Firth of Forth in the east. Much of the central lowlands was formed by the floodplain of the River Clyde.
Main centres located in the Central Lowlands include:
By some definitions, the coas to the Firth of Forth (including southern Fife and northern Lothian are part of the central lowlands. This would add the cities of Dunfermline and Edinburgh - the national capital - to the above list.
